How we found it easier to reverse engineer e-Boks than to get proper support.

As a company, we faced a challenge that should have been simple: We wanted to use e-Boks' integration to receive messages directly, so we could avoid constantly logging into e-Boks, manually retrieving invoices, downloading them, and sending them to our accounting system. It sounds like a straightforward task in a digital age, but it turned out to be anything but that. After months of frustration, dead links, and no help from e-Boks' support, we ended up taking matters into our own hands - and it proved to be both faster and more effective to reverse engineer their system than to wait for a response.

A Wall of Silence and Empty Promises

Our journey began with a visit to e-Boks' help page, where we hoped to find documentation for their integration. But there was nothing - not a single line of code, not a guide, nothing. The few links we found within the e-Boks solution itself only led to 404 errors and dead ends. So, we decided to contact their support. That turned out to yield nothing useful.

I sent my first inquiry and waited patiently. After 14 days - their own stated response time - I had heard nothing. I followed up, and the replies were always the same: "We haven't forgotten you" or "We're not ready with the documentation for the portal yet." I wasn't asking them to publish full documentation for everyone; I just wanted help to move forward. But even that was too much to ask. Several times, I was promised that a technician would contact me - it never happened. The more I pressed for answers, the faster they closed my chats. After 11 months, I still had nothing but excuses and silence.

    A Monopoly Without Accountability

What makes the situation particularly frustrating is that e-Boks is a monopoly in Denmark. As a company, we're forced to use their platform, no matter how poor the service is. There are no alternatives, and we're entirely at their mercy. Their stated response time is 14 days, which is already a wait most wouldn't accept from other services in 2025. But when they don't even stick to their own promises, it becomes clear that their monopoly status has removed any incentive to provide decent support.

    The Solution: Reverse Engineering

In the end, we gave up waiting and decided to take matters into our own hands. We sat down and reverse-engineered e-Boks' system. It wasn't easy, but it was surprisingly faster than getting a useful reply from their support. By analyzing their APIs and experimenting with calls, we figured out how to retrieve the documents we needed. The result? A fully automated integration that now pulls invoices and other messages directly into our accounting system without any manual effort.

In fact, I considered offering e-Boks to write the technical documentation they so clearly lack, and maybe even create a reference application for them. It could save others from the same frustration we experienced. But most importantly: We now have a solution that works, and we've escaped the hassle of e-Boks' flawed system.

    An Invitation to Others

If other companies are also tired of manual processes and e-Boks' inadequate support, we have a solution that works. Our integration allows for complete automation of document handling and secure access management. If you're interested in learning more about how you can do the same, write to us - we're happy to share our experiences.

    Conclusion

It shouldn't be the case that it's easier to reverse engineer a solution than to get help from a service we're forced to use. e-Boks' lack of support and documentation is a scandal, given their monopoly position. But where there's a will, there's a way - and we found ours. Perhaps it's time for e-Boks to take a look at their priorities, new signature features in e-Boks, and collaborations with other big players. How about getting your support and existing solution in order first?
