The Problem With the American Cloud
A handful of US providers dominate the European market. That has consequences most companies discover too late.
US legislation like the CLOUD Act and FISA 702 can compel American companies to hand over data, even when that data lives in an EU data center. When the provider is American, the location of the server matters less than the nationality of the company operating it. European courts have struck down previous data transfer agreements for exactly this reason, and the uncertainty keeps coming back.
Then there is the practical side. Egress fees that punish you for leaving. Pricing in dollars that swings with the exchange rate. Services that change terms overnight. And a skills market where "cloud experience" quietly means "experience with one or two American platforms".
None of this means the big clouds are bad products. It means the default is worth questioning.
What Self-Hosting Actually Means
Self-hosting does not mean racking servers in your basement. It means running your software on infrastructure you control, in a jurisdiction you trust, using open standards you can take with you.
The tooling has matured enormously. Proxmox, Kubernetes, Postgres, MinIO, and thousands of open source projects make it possible to run a modern, resilient stack without a hyperscaler. What is usually missing is not technology. It is time, and the confidence that someone competent keeps it running.
That is the gap we want to close: the control of self-hosting, without the operational burden that usually comes with it.
